Do you ever get off track in your research? If so, you aren’t alone. Today’s post is about my getting off track. I was recently asked by a local business owner if I knew anything about the Kelm Bakery. Jokingly, I commented that I ‘immigrated’ into the community while his family had roots in the community. After he explained that they had found some KELM items on their property and wanted to see if any descendants wanted them, I decided to do some research.
Since the local newspaper has been digitized, it was fairly easy to research the bakery and the family of the owner. The first thing I found was an ad about the re-opening of the Kelm Bakery.
While I learned quite a bit about the Kelm family of Seneca, Kansas, I did not find any descendants.

page 4Fred J. Kelm was called form Denver to assist in the care of his brother, Otto Kelm, who is in critical condition. Fred left employment at the Denver county club where extensive improvements are being made. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kelm, Nadine McQueary, is recovering from a well night fatal attach of influenza which she suffered during the winter. She is now well on the road to recovery but there was a time when her life was despaired of. Mr. McQuary is employed by the Packard Motor Co. It was while on a trip with her husband into Wyoming to deliver a car that Mrs. McQueary caught cold.

You are hereby notified that a petition has been filed in said court by Anna Grindle, as executrix of the last will and testament and estate of Otto A. Kelm, deceased, praying for an order, judgment and decree of the Probate Court of Nemaha County, Kansas, approving and settling her final account filed with said petition as “Exhibit A” thereof, determining the descent of the real and personal property of decedent pursuant to the terms of his will, allowing executrix claim for her services, expenses and attorneys’ fees, and ordering stock in The Nemaha Building and Loan Association belonging to said estate assigned over to her in satisfaction of her said claim for services and expenses, and ordering distribution of any balance, if any, on hand in said estate, and finally discharging executrix and her bondsmen from any further duty and liability in the matter of said estate; and you are hereby required to file your written defenses thereto on or before Friday the 2nd day of July AD. 1943 at 2:00 o’clock PM of said day in said court in the probate court room in the City of Seneca, Nemaha County, Kansas, at which time and place said cause will be heard. Should you fail therein judgment and decree will be entered in due course upon said petition.
