Saturday Night Genealogy Fun

Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

It’s Saturday Night again –

time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Here is your assignment, should you decide to accept it (you ARE reading this, so I assume that you really want to play along – cue the Mission Impossible music!):

1)  What genealogy search/research did you do this past week?  Did you have a research goal or plan?  Tell us about one or more search/research session.  Did you make any breakthroughs in your research?

Around July 1, I realized that I wasn’t making much progress on my 2023 goals. Thus, I changed my ‘methodology’ and adopted and modified a process that some other genealogy blogger use. These bloggers spend a month digging into an ancestor. At the end of the month, they switch to another ancestor. My modification was to work on one of my 3rd great-grandparent couples each week.

While this timeline doesn’t allow me to do much in-depth research, it does allow me to update my sources. In addition, it provides the opportunity to use sources that weren’t readily available when I previously researched these ancestors. Thus, I am researching digitized newspapers and the digitized county records on FamilySearch.

About the time I started this process, FamilySearch revealed their new United States Wills and Deeds Experimental Search. This tool, has been very valuable. Using this resource, I was able to QUICKLY locate quite a few deeds. (see my post, Experimental Search)

While I’ve been updating the research, I’ve also been writing blog posts. Since the vast majority of my blog posts are scheduled into the future, the blog posts from this past week’s research about Jason Hammond will start appearing August 14. My posts dated July 24 thru July 27 were the result of my FOSTER research from two weeks ago.

While some (likely many) will not view this method of switching research subjects every week as productive, I have actually found that I have been very productive these past few weeks.
