It’s Saturday Night –
time for more Genealogy Fun!
Your mission, should you decide to accept it (cue the Mission Impossible music here) is to:
1) Do you have plans to travel to do onsite genealogy research? [Thank you to Linda Stufflebean for suggesting topics!]
Our travel plans for 2020 included three genealogy related trips. The first was to visit the St. Louis Public Library which houses the old ‘lending’ book collection of the National Genealogical Society. Later that spring or early summer we were going to Garrard County, Kentucky to see where my Crawford ancestors lived. After that a trip to Ashtabula County Ohio was discussed so my husband could see where his ancestors lived. Unfortunately, all of those plans were set aside when SARS-Cov2 hit.
Since my husband spent over a week in the hospital with pneumonia in 2017, we have been very reluctant to do much traveling — especially if it involved being indoors with lots of people. Thus, our trips since March 2020 have involved destinations where we could be outdoors, which fortunately has included cemeteries.
We’ve thrown around ideas for a trip this fall, including possibly going to Fort Wayne, Indiana to use the Allen County Public Library. I’ve also contemplated the Kentucky trip without spending time at Eastern Kentucky University. Since it is relatively close, The Midwest Genealogy Center in Independence Missouri is always on our list of potential trips.
Thanks to the efforts of the Topeka Genealogical Society and other societies to continue their special interest groups, I have the opportunity to participate without having to travel.
As Randy pointed out in his blog, the access to sources from my genealogy office is amazing. When I need to access some ‘locked’ images on the FamilySearch site, I can travel 1/2 mile to my local library, which is a FamilySearch affiliate and access many of those images.
Unfortunately, COVID is returning and my health is beginning to also complicate the matter. Thus, our travel plans may not make it past the ‘discussion’ stage.
Good luck with your health and travels. I made it to Salt Lake this year to spend 2 days at the FHL. I’d like to go to the Mid-Continent Public Library and the Allen County Public Library someday. I’d like to make the Popplewell and Roberts reunions someday, also. My Grandma spent a few vacations at the Garrard County Courthouse way back when. I hope you get there at some point.

Hurts, Bryants, Wrays/Rays, Cobb, Wilson. My family left about 1870 as my 2nd great grandpa shot a KKK clansman, got arrested, got pardoned by the governor, and moved to Illinois.
